5 Effective Tips to Choose the Perfect Carpets

Carpets are known for their comfort and plush feel. They provide support to your feet and also add charm to your interiors. For this reason, it is one of the most commonly preferred flooring options in commercial and residential spaces.

In today’s time there are a number of carpeting options available, choosing the right one is not an easy task. However, the tips given below make the process easier.

1) Understand Your Purpose and Lifestyle

Before you go through with installing carpets on your floors, you need to have a clear idea of the purpose. You need to decide if the carpet is for your home or office. Besides, you also need to ask yourself if you are installing carpets for protecting the floor underneath, for warmth or for aesthetics.

Another thing to take into consideration is your lifestyle. If you are installing carpets in a home with pets and kids, going for a textured loop carpet of hard twist cut pile carpet is wise. This is because these are hard wearing varieties. You may also want to go for colours that don’t show stains as easily. If you are a couple, you may want to go for more luxurious plush pile carpets in flat colours. If you are a show person or entertainer, something more dramatic like a cut and loop pile carpet would be apt. These can also be bought in mid to dark colours.

2) Determine as Per Carpeting Area

One more thing that considerably decides what carpet to choose is the space that you wish to install carpets in. If you are carpeting high footfall areas such as lounges and living rooms, hard wearing loop pile carpets in synthetic fibres would do the job. Meanwhile, when carpeting something like a guest room, plush pile carpets in wool or triexta are a great choice. For places with a considerably moderate footfall such as personal office space or bedrooms, a textured mixture of loop and cut pile carpets will look appealing and endow durability.

3) Evaluate Different Carpet Styles

Carpet styles are basically the way in which carpets are woven. There are three main types, loop pile carpets, cut pile carpets and loop and cut pile carpets.

Loop pile carpets consist of fibres that are stitched from the back to front of the carpets. This style holds carpet fibres in place compactly and is hard wearing. Suitable for high traffic areas, these carpets are further classified into textured multi loop, uniform level loop and patterned sisal varieties. When you are a family with kids or are planning to carpet the living room or outdoor barbeque areas, these are suitable.

Meanwhile, cut pile carpets are stitched through the back of the carpets and cut into uniformity. This leaves thick upright fibres that create a luxurious and formal vibe. These are further divided into plush piles, in which fibres can lean to either direction, and twist pile in which fibres are twisted and lean in different directions. Private lounges, board rooms and guest rooms can be laid with these. The fibres that stick out are susceptible to vacuum and foot marks. Hence, these cannot be used in areas expecting more crowds.

A third type of carpet is a combination of loop and cut piles. These create patterned and artistic effects while also having benefits of both styles. They are available in leveled and textured varieties. These do not lead to footprints or marks and are also great to look at. Medium to high traffic areas such as dining rooms and conference rooms can be laid with these.

4) Choose the Right Fabric

Carpet fabrics are largely classified as natural and artificial. Wool is the most commonly used natural fibre. It has insulating properties which keep the carpet warm during winters and cool in summers. Additionally, wool is extremely luxurious. Nonetheless, wool carpets are expensive and not to be used in high traffic areas.

Synthetic fibres like polyester, nylon and polypropylene are more durable and are available in a number of varieties. They are also more economical. They are therefore suited for high bearing uses. Due to their fade resistance and colour fastness they are used in kid’s rooms. Nonetheless, they have environmental impacts and their safety for kids needs to be evaluated before use.

Triexta is a fibre that is a hybrid of natural and synthetic fabrics. 37% of it is derived from renewable polymer made with corn sugar. It is durable and luxurious. In addition, it has properties that allow stains to be cleaned by only cold water without fading. Carpets made with such material are suited for kid’s rooms and mid to high traffic areas like lounges and living rooms. Wool blend fabrics have the same qualities at triexta but they are priced a little higher.

5) Consider Carpet Colour and Fading

The colour of your carpet makes a lot of difference. Lighter colours can make a small room look spacious while darker colours can lead to an artistic feel. Neutral shades are preferred for warmth and comfort. The colour also needs to be chosen after evaluating the possibility of staining. In family homes with kids and pets, shades that are more forgiving are chosen.

Other than this, you need to choose a colour that goes with your interiors even after fading a few years down the line. Choosing shades that are about two shades darker than your expected colour is recommended.
