Types of Carpet
The aesthetic appeal, texture, and longevity of any carpet are majorly determined by its type. Carpets come in both natural and man-made fibers, with styles for every floor of your home decor. CUT PILE: Cut pile is a style of carpet that is sheared, exposing the ends of the carpet fiber. Cut piles come in different lengths and thicknesses. They are the most popular styles of carpet today and tend to be softer underfoot and to touch than loop pile carpets.
Cut Pile Plush: The manufacturing of carpet which can be best described as sewing strands of yarn into a backing material, creating thousands of yarn loops. When the loops are cut, a cut pile carpet is created, often known as plush.
Cut Pile Twist: Twist in carpet technically refers to the number of times the yarn or yarns are twisted. In the industry, the carpets with a high twist per inch are referred to as cut pile twist carpets. These are basically achieved by cutting the tops of the loops so the pile stands upright with an even smooth velvet surface. The yarn is constructed with a slight twist, which has been chemically or heat set.
Frieze: Higher quality frieze carpeting contains up to 7-9 twists per inch, creating a curled appearance. The fibers flop, concealing dirt, footprints and even vacuum marks. These carpet fibers are loosely constructed, lending itself to the nickname “shag” or “California shag.”
LOOP PILE: With the traditional weaving process, all pile starts out as looped. The fibers are woven in and out of the backing in tightly packed loops, resulting in a firm and knotted pile. One of the advantages of loop pile is that it’s trackless. Loop pile carpets also tend to be easier to clean, since dirt and liquids sit on the surface of the carpet rather than spreading deeper into the fibers.
Level Loop Pile: This type is made with loops that are all the same height, creating a flat, smooth surface. When used in the home, level loop carpeting is often constructed with taller loops to give it a more luxurious feel, closer to cut pile carpet.
Multi-Level Loop Pile: Also referred to as a high-low loop or sculptured loop, this carpet style is made up of different pile heights, two or three heights being the most common. The pile height difference creates a surface that can be described as sculptured, with the pattern appearing to have been carved out of the carpet.
Sisal: These are made from sustainably harvested leaves of the cactus plant. Sisal is not the same fiber as coir or jute. Sisal is stronger and more durable than other natural fibers, making the carpet extremely durable.
COMBINATION OF CUT AND LOOP PILE: They are a combination of straight cut and looped fibers which has allowed designers to create timeless textured patterns. This type of carpet can bring charm to any home decor. Popular during the 70s and 80s, cut and loop combination carpets are making a comeback!
